CHICAGO YACHT CLUB
2002 RACE TO MACKINAC ISLAND
MONOHULL DIVISIONS
The monohull fleet will sail under LMPHRF in two divisions, each of which will be competing for one of our two main trophies. The divisions will be based on rating with the larger boats competing for the Mackinac Trophy and the smaller boats competing for the Mackinac Cup. The two divisions will be approximately the same size in number of boats. This should substantially increase the likelihood of sailing in the same wind with your competition. The LMPHRF handicap numbers used will be your 2002 LMPHRF final handicaps.
Extensive development work was done by US Sailing, LMPHRF and the Chicago Yacht Club on a distance handicap system to adjust general handicaps to wind velocity and direction conditions specific to a particular distance race such as the Race to Mackinac. The results are very promising and work continues, but further refinement is required for implementation.
Americap scoring will be offered again this year as a voluntary unofficial overlay for those who submit a 2002 Americap certificate with their entry. Brag flags will be awarded to the top five finishers under Americap scoring. Please contact US Sailing to obtain a valid Americap Certificate for your boat.
One Design Sections
As in prior years, we will again offer competitive racing to approved One Design Classes. The Mackinac Committee recognizes the trend toward one design racing and continues to encourage such classes to participate in our race. To register your One Design Class to race, an official class representative must contact the CYC Mackinac Committee Selections Chairman by May 15, 2002. The CYC Selections Committee will decide which One Design Sections will be invited to participate in this year’s race.
STREAMLINED SIGN-IN / SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
The CYC Mackinac Committee has reviewed its sign-in procedures in order to streamline the process without de-emphasizing the importance of safety requirements. A major change this year will be that it will no longer be necessary to produce a life raft certificate at sign-in. However, this is a requirement of the ORC Compliance Statement that must be signed and submitted at the pre-race registration and will be an item of special interest at all post-race inspections.
The burden is placed upon the Owner or Person-in-Charge to possess a valid Life Raft Certificate or, in the case of a multihull, a signed Anti-Exposure Suit Certificate. (A Valid Life Raft Certificate must contain the signature of an approved certifying organization along with the date of inspection and must be on board your boat at all times during the race.) No excuses will be accepted; you will be protested and failure to comply with any ORC safety requirement will be a significant consideration in the decision whether to extend a race invitation to you in future years.
MACKINAC ISLAND DOCKING RESERVATIONS
If you plan to keep your boat moored at Mackinac Island Marina past 1200 on Wednesday, July 24, you must make reservations well in advance by calling the Michigan DNR Central Reservation Line 1-800-44-PARKS. Reservations can no longer be secured with the dock master at the marina.
