Americap II requires scoring system changes for the 2003 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Presented by Lands’ End Business Outfitters

Race Scoring System Modified and Enhanced by RMI Network Services, Inc.

Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 26, 2003) – Now in its third year of providing technical support for the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, RMI Network Services, Inc. this year also took on  the task of changing the race administration and scoring system originally developed by Microsoft for the 2002 race.

The race scoring was modified to use the new Americap II handicapping system and to include an expanded set of race endings for participants. Many ease-of-use improvements were made to both the administration and the scoring systems. Hosting is provided at the RMI facility, making available a robust and secure environment.

For the second year, software developed by RMI will allow sailing enthusiasts using the Internet to follow the progress of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. This will make the race more interesting for those ashore and allow the participants to re-run the race when it is done.

Each boat carrying a tracking unit will automatically report its position to Sasco via satellite every two hours. An RMI Network Services server will download the position data, process it and create the new tracking displays that will be made available immediately.

In addition, for the third year the computer networking required to provide Internet access,

e-mail and printing for the race committee, sponsors and participants of the race is being provided by RMI Network Services.  The networks are in two locations, at the Monroe Station of the Chicago Yacht Club and in the finishing tent on Mackinac Island.

At both the Chicago and Mackinac ends participants are able to connect their laptops to the network and gain Internet, e-mail and printing capabilities. Wireless and ethernet connectivity, simple instructions and on-site help make this an easy task.

From a technical perspective, at the two sites, Internet access speeds are boosted by the use of Internet caching facilities, individual workstations are protected from outside access over the Internet by the use of proxy facilities, and inappropriate websites are blocked by a filter. Satellite communications are used at the Mackinac site for Internet access.

As might be expected, two of the boats in this and previous Macs have RMI skippers, Accord and Ozymandias IV.
