2005
RACE DATE The start of the 97th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac will be on Saturday, July 16, 2005. The Notice of Race will be available in early 2005 and mailed to all recent participants. August 20, 2004 THANK
YOU TO ALL The 2004 Race to Mackinac will be remembered as one of endurance. Congratulations to the winners, congratulations to those who stuck it out and finished. Was this the “slowest Mac”? Not really. How you define the term will be the subject to debate until the memory fades. 1989 was the last slow Mac recalled by many still racing today. That year a significant number of boats finished throughout Wednesday. Records from older races show Thursday finishes for some. To captain and crew, there will be faster races. To the Race Committee, thank you for the extra day standing on watch. To family, friends and other ground support, thank you for your patience. We hope the winners and friends will join us for the Mackinac and Offshore Awards Banquet in Chicago on Saturday, November 6. Invitations to all participants will be mailed in early October. Slow or fast, there will always be a Mac. Hope to see you for a faster one next year. The 97th running will start on Saturday, July 16, 2005. July 20, 2004 Race Tracking Completely Sold Out Interest in Race Tracking has surpassed all previous years with 100% of all available transponders aboard boats heading north on Saturday. This will truly expand the racing experience to many more families and shore based support groups. Many thanks to the team of volunteers who tested each unit here in Chicago prior to delivering them to each boat. This helps assure every tracking participant that when powered up these units will perform as expected. Units are distributed across the sailing fleet as follows:
Chicago Yacht Club is one of the first clubs to recognize that there is a thirst for information about how teams are doing during the race. Over the past several years offshore race tracking technology has improved immensely, major events around the globe from New Zealand, South America and to Europe are now offering this means for including more and more people in the progress of boats as the crews work to find their best advantage toward the finish line. Follow this year's Mac by selecting the Race Tracking link on the left hand side of this page. The information is updated every two hours so be sure to book mark the Chicago Yacht Club Mac Home page and check in often. July 12, 2004
AMERICAP WEIGHT LIMITS TO APPLY Additional Sailing Instruction #4 has been posted. If you have a monohull boat and specified a LOWER crew weight than the AMERICAP II default crew weight limit when you applied for your certificate, ASI #4 applies to you. Crew Weight Limits remain waived pursuant to the NOR for boats that accepted default weight limits or specified crew weight limits greater than the default weight. Crew weight limits applicable to One Design Class Sections continue to apply. Chicago Tartan Ten Association class rules apply to the Race to Mackinac; however, these rules do not provide a crew weight limit for the race. For all J-105 boats, ASI #4 has the affect of setting a 1490 pound Crew Weight Limit.
PRE-RACE PARTY
Due to the popularity of the Pre-Race Party and to ensure an enjoyable event for the race participants, families and friends, wristbands are required. July 8, 2004 TURBO SECTION ESTABLISHED
A new section designated the Turbo Section is being added to the Mackinac Cup Division in recognition of
the advances in yacht design and the specialized use of new technology. The
Mackinac Committee is pleased to announce the formation of a Turbo Section for
the significant number of Transpac 52's and advanced Maxi's that have entered
the 2004 race.

II™
will again be the rating rule for monohull boats.
Monohulls will sail under one of two divisions, the
Mackinac Cup Division for the faster and generally
larger boats and the Mackinac Trophy Division for the
smaller and generally slower boats. Monohulls rated
under Americap II with canting keels or water ballast
will be assigned to one of these divisions as well.
Monohull owners are encouraged to click Americap for
rating certificate information. US SAILING has made a
number of improvements to rating formulas that should
further tighten the competition. Multihulls
will continue to be rated under LMPHRF and may click
LMPHRF for rating certificate information. There
will be more trophies and more brag flags awarded in the
larger sections in 2004. Check out the Prizes section in
the NOR. Sprit
boat owners should know there is a sprit boat section
under consideration. One is planned if consensus is
strong and sufficient entries are received. The section
would include all sprit boats except the J-105’s who
expect to qualify again for a one design section. Sprit
boat owners are encouraged to make their thoughts known
to Chief Measurer Ron White at stampede@skyenet.net. There
has been much rumor regarding new standards for life
rafts. The latest information from US SAILING indicates
that current designs will be grandfathered if
manufactured before January 2006. The Mac Committee will
continue its present policy of honoring raft inspection
certificates for three years for rafts carried solely in
fresh water. We
hope you will join us in 2004 for this great race. Sincerely, |
