SPIRITED SEA SCOUTS GO TO WIN THE ANNUAL SMITH REGATTA
Sunday, July 11…. This year’s Smith Sea Scouts Regatta was off and running at Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Harbor. Adventurous teenage sailors showed their stuff as boy and girl scouts climbed aboard 420’s (two to a boat) and took on the challenge of unpredictable Lake Michigan. As always, the Smith Regatta was sponsored by the Chicago Yacht Club. A yearly competition for young sailors who aim to become old salts, it is named for one of Chicago’s own, Thomas R. Smith, a long-time competitive racer himself and veteran member of the Club. Weather was sailor-ordered. Skies turned from sunny to a comforting cloudy... winds were consistent, shifting from 5 to 11 knots… seas remained calm and flat. Under these ideal conditions, the scouts boarded a fleet of 420’s, with two to a boat, and headed out to Lake Michigan from Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Harbor. Through a series of 7 continuous races, the Scouts navigated the lake in the wake of Smith’s Legacy, that of “always – and honorably – Going To Win”.
Winners of the Smith Regatta:
1st place: Heidi Rittmeyer Peter Bied 2nd place: Emily Harrington Margaret Johnston 3rd place: Charlie Kaules Christian Kaules Following the Smith Regatta, a festive Luncheon Award Ceremony was held at Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station. Plaques were presented to winners in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place; by tradition, the 1st place winners will also havetheir names inscribed on the Thomas R. Smith Sea Scouts Trophy permanently berthed at the Chicago Yacht Club’s Monroe Street Station.
